Deck Builder Alpharetta

Obsidian Exteriors is a family-owned deck builder based right here in Alpharetta. For more than a decade, we’ve designed and built custom decks for homeowners who want more usable outdoor space, whether that’s a simple platform off the kitchen, a second-story deck over a walkout basement, or a full rebuild of a worn-out wood deck.

Because we’re local, we know what Alpharetta backyards throw at a deck: sloped lots, red clay, heavy shade from mature trees, humid summers, and HOA design rules. We plan every build around those conditions so your deck looks right on day one and holds up for years. Serving the wider area? See our North Metro Atlanta deck builder page for the full overview of our deck services.

Custom Decks Designed for Alpharetta Backyards

  • Sloped lots and walkout basements: Many Alpharetta homes sit on rolling lots, so elevated and multi-level decks are common. We size posts, beams, and footings for the height and load of your deck.

  • Red clay soil: Georgia clay holds water and shifts. We set footings at proper depth on undisturbed soil to keep your deck solid and level.

  • Shade and humidity: Decks under pines and hardwoods stay damp longer, which invites mildew and rot. We recommend materials and spacing that let your deck dry out and stay clean.

  • HOA guidelines: Many Alpharetta neighborhoods require architectural review before a deck is built. We help you choose materials, colors, and railing styles that fit your HOA’s rules.

Decking Materials We Offer

Composite Decking

Composite is the most popular choice among our Alpharetta clients. We install composite decking from trusted brands including Trex and TimberTech. Composite boards resist moisture, fading, insects, and splintering, and they never need staining or sealing. It costs more upfront than wood but saves years of maintenance.

PVC Decking

PVC decking is made entirely of synthetic material with no wood fibers, making it lighter than composite and highly resistant to moisture and mold. It’s a great fit for shaded, damp backyards and for homeowners who want the lowest-maintenance deck possible. PVC is a premium option that typically costs more than composite.

Pressure-Treated Wood

Pressure-treated pine is the most budget-friendly decking option and a classic look many homeowners love. It’s treated to resist rot and insects but needs regular cleaning and sealing or staining every few years to stay in good shape. Pressure-treated lumber is also the standard choice for deck framing, even under composite and PVC boards.

Railings

We pair decks with low-maintenance aluminum railings, as well as wood and composite railing systems, to match your home’s style and HOA requirements.

Want to compare premium hardwoods like Ipe too? Our custom deck building services page covers every material we work with.

Alpharetta Deck Permits

Most new decks in Alpharetta need a building permit, and we handle the process for you. Here’s what Alpharetta homeowners should know:

  • City of Alpharetta permits: Decks inside city limits are permitted through the City of Alpharetta’s online Permitting Portal, not Fulton County.

  • Check your jurisdiction: An Alpharetta mailing address doesn’t always mean you’re in the City of Alpharetta. Some homes are in Johns Creek, Milton, or unincorporated Fulton or Forsyth County, each with its own permit office. We’ll confirm which one applies to your property.

  • Trees count: If a deck will disturb specimen trees, the city may require an Engineering Permit Card, known as a “Pink Card,” before the building permit is issued.

  • HOA first: If your neighborhood has an HOA, you’ll typically need architectural approval before construction begins.

We prepare the plans, submit the permit, schedule inspections, and make sure your deck is built to code.

Deck Building Services Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why should I choose Obsidian Exteriors for deck building in Alpharetta, GA?

We’re a family-owned exterior company based in Alpharetta with more than a decade of experience building custom decks. We know local lots, soil, permits, and HOA rules, and we keep you informed from the first consultation to the final walkthrough.

It starts with a free consultation where we walk your yard, discuss how you want to use the space, and take measurements. We then create a design and material plan that fits your budget, handle permits and inspections, build your deck with our own crew, and finish with a final walkthrough.

We offer composite decking from Trex and TimberTech, PVC decking, and pressure-treated wood, along with aluminum, wood, and composite railings. We’ll walk you through the cost, look, and maintenance of each option so you can choose with confidence.

Both handle shade and humidity far better than wood. PVC has no wood content, so it offers the most resistance to moisture and mold, while composite costs less and comes in a wide range of wood-look styles. We’ll recommend the best fit for your yard and budget.

Yes. Pressure-treated pine is the most affordable decking option and looks great when maintained. Plan to clean and seal or stain it every few years to protect it from moisture and sun.

Most new decks in Alpharetta require a building permit, especially decks attached to the house or raised above the ground. Obsidian Exteriors handles the permit application and inspections for you.

Not always. Some homes with Alpharetta mailing addresses are actually in Johns Creek, Milton, or unincorporated Fulton or Forsyth County. We’ll confirm your jurisdiction and file with the right permit office.
